Polysilicon plunged: Spot prices have fallen the most since June

Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) data showed that last week's sluggish polysilicon market, spot prices have fallen the most since June.

According to a survey conducted by London researchers on October 11-October 17, the average price of polysilicon has fallen by 6.1% to $41.13/kg. The previous week's survey by BNEF on the polysilicon price index showed a decline of 5.8%.

Polysilicon manufacturers Wacker Chemie AG (WCH) and Renewable Energy Corp. ASA have experienced a 48% decline in polysilicon spot prices since March, due to cuts in subsidies from Germany and Italy, and a weak demand for panels. Sean McLoughlin, an analyst at HSBC Holdings Plc, headquartered in London, said that as “oversupply” damages the industry, this decline may even force the largest polysilicon manufacturers to cut polysilicon prices for customers who sign long-term contracts. “You don’t want to see Look at the customers to leave.” McLoughlin said in a telephone interview that because the contract price would make them uncompetitive, their opponents could buy directly on the spot market.

The day before yesterday, Goldman Sachs lowered the rating of REC from “buy” to “neutral”. On the Oslo Stock Exchange, REC shares fell 3.4% to 4.77 kroons. In Frankfurt trading market, Wacker rose 1.4% to 78.66 euros.

Companies that process polysilicon into wafers to create batteries for panels are driving down raw material costs, and oversupply markets have affected the prices of goods that these companies are trying to recoup from polysilicon manufacturers.

According to new energy financial data, the price of 6-inch solar wafers and solar cells fell slightly compared with that of polysilicon. Wafers fell slightly by 1.7% to $1.71/tablet and photovoltaic cell prices fell by 1.4% to 69 cents/watt.

The largest solar cell manufacturer, JA Solar Holdings Co., fell 76% this year. The New York Stock Exchange was at 11:41 am local time. The company's stock fell 0.6% to $1.69. Suntech, the world's largest panel maker, fell 2.7% to $2.16.
