One of the major hurdles in the growth of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) is the lack of high-quality content. This issue has been well-known for years, as developers struggle to create immersive experiences without a solid foundation of digital assets.
While big studios and tech companies are pouring resources into VR and AR development, independent creators and smaller teams often find it challenging to get started. A key problem lies in the need to build extensive 3D environments, which can be both time-consuming and technically demanding.
To address this challenge, Google has launched Poly—a cloud-based platform designed to help developers access and use 3D models more easily. Think of Poly as a digital marketplace for 3D assets, similar to how Flickr revolutionized photo sharing but tailored for developers rather than photographers.
Users can upload their own 3D creations to Poly and share them under a Creative Commons license, making it easier for others to reuse and integrate these assets into their own projects. Developers can search, download, and use these models directly in their VR or AR applications, saving valuable time and effort.
The platform supports multiple formats and works seamlessly with popular AR and VR platforms such as Apple’s ARKit and Google’s ARCore. Additionally, users who create 3D art using Google’s Tilt Brush can now directly upload their work to Poly, further expanding the library of available assets.
Google aims to empower developers—especially those without large teams or budgets—to build compelling AR and VR experiences. “Now, anyone can create a website, and more people are building mobile apps, but creating AR and VR content is still much harder,†said Jason Toff, a project manager at Google. “This was a real pain point for our own internal teams when we were developing AR and VR projects.â€
Initially, Poly features a collection of 3D models created by Google itself. However, the company expects the platform to grow rapidly as more creators contribute their own designs and assets. With an open and collaborative approach, Poly could become a vital resource for the next generation of AR and VR developers worldwide.
