In 2023, Qimi Technology set an ambitious goal: to disrupt the traditional TV market within five years. The company believes that laser TVs have the potential to completely replace large-screen LCD TVs. Industry experts agree, stating that from both technical and user experience perspectives, there is currently no valid reason to prevent laser TVs from replacing their LCD counterparts. As the cost of laser TVs continues to drop, market adoption increases, and consumer awareness grows, more people are now accustomed to watching content on screens larger than 100 inches.
With consumers increasingly drawn to the immersive visual experience of oversized TVs, mainstream LCD manufacturers continue to push for larger screen sizes. Meanwhile, laser TVs offer even more impressive solutions, satisfying the demand for bigger, better, and more comfortable viewing experiences.
Following the success of internet brands like Xiaomi Mijia and Kansang in the smart TV market, Qimi Technology recently launched three new models: the world's first 120-inch 4K dual-color laser screenless TV, T1, and the 100-inch 1080P laser screenless TV A1Pro. These products mark a significant step forward in the evolution of home entertainment.
It’s no coincidence that manufacturers are competing fiercely in the laser TV space. Unlike LCDs, laser TVs not only offer greater scalability but also bring advantages such as health benefits, energy efficiency, and lower costs. Based on diffuse reflection technology, laser TVs emit less radiation and consume less power, reducing eye strain during long viewing sessions. For instance, while a 120-inch LCD TV can cost between ¥500,000 and ¥1 million, a high-end laser TV of the same size is priced below ¥80,000.
“We’re entering the laser TV market at just the right time,†said Zhong Bo, founder and CEO of Qimi Technology. As a pioneer in the development of screenless TVs, the company aims to revolutionize and replace outdated product forms with innovative alternatives. Industry experts also emphasized that from a technical and experiential standpoint, there’s no real obstacle preventing laser TVs from taking over from LCDs.
Unlike most commercially available laser TVs that use monochromatic light sources, Qimi has introduced dual-color laser technology, significantly improving color purity, brightness, and gamut. The T1 model, for example, offers 4K resolution comparable to top-tier LCDs, with incredibly sharp image details. Its NTSC color gamut reaches 94.8%, far exceeding the average of 70% found in most LCD TVs and even surpassing OLED models. Additionally, it delivers 4000 ANSI lumens of brightness and maintains 3500 ANSI lumens in actual viewing conditions, making it suitable for well-lit environments.
“We believe in doing things right,†Zhong Bo told reporters. Since its inception, Qimi has focused on creating practical and user-friendly home entertainment solutions. To enhance picture quality, the company partnered with Zhongqiang Optoelectronics, the world’s largest DLP projector manufacturer. In terms of audio, it collaborated with Harman Kardon to develop a premium surround sound system, overcoming several key technical challenges in laser TV development.
One of the biggest challenges in laser TV design is vibration. Even minor movements can cause the projected image to shake, especially when high-power audio systems are built-in. To address this, Qimi and Harman Kardon worked together to improve product rigidity through advanced material selection and structural design. They also implemented a symmetrical acoustic layout, effectively solving the industry-wide issue of vibration.
“The level of stability achieved here is beyond description,†said Liu Cangsong, vice president of Harman Kardon’s embedded audio division. He explained that even at maximum volume, the entire room may vibrate slightly, yet each pixel on the screen remains almost motionless. This indicates that the displacement is much less than 0.05 mm, a remarkable achievement in precision.
As laser TV technology gains traction, the market is showing clear signs of growth. Peng Xiandong, general manager of China Consumer Electronics Co., stated that since 2017, the laser TV market has grown by up to 200%, particularly in the 80-inch segment, where laser TVs now account for over 60% of sales.
However, with so many players entering the market, the industry has become somewhat chaotic. Zhong Bo noted that standardization is urgently needed. One major issue is the lack of uniform standards for brightness measurement. Different manufacturers use varying units and testing methods, leading to confusion among consumers.
To promote healthy industry growth and provide clearer, more reliable specifications, Qimi proposed adding “viewing brightness†alongside peak brightness when labeling projection products. This metric reflects the actual user experience, with higher color temperatures resulting in lower luminance values. After extensive testing, Qimi found that the best viewing experience occurs when the color temperature is set between 7500K and 8500K. Starting soon, all Miji products will include this “viewing brightness†measurement under those conditions.
“We want to clean up the projection industry and set an example by regulating our own behavior,†Zhong Bo said. Looking ahead, he reiterated Qimi’s vision: “We believe laser TVs can take on this responsibility and completely replace large LCD TVs. With falling costs, growing market popularity, and increased consumer awareness, more people will soon be used to watching TVs over 100 inches. In the next 3.5 years, we’ll do everything we can to make this happen.â€
