Dr. Zhang Hongjiang is a master figure who straddles the academic world and the industry. He has a very high status in the academic circle and the business world. The experience of these two major areas also makes it a colorful career path.

  Zhang Hongjiang’s early experience

After the 17-year-old Zhang Hongjiang admitted Zhengzhou University with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering came to Shijiazhuang 54th Institute of Ministry of Electronics Industry to work. After more than three years of work, Zhang Hongjiang emerged from more than 4,000 engineers and was recommended to the Danish University of Science and Technology for two years.

In the second year of study, the tutor requested the school to authorize Zhang Hongjiang to directly study for a doctor without a master's degree, and eventually the school approved the case. Afterwards, Zhang Hongjiang chose remote sensing image processing as his research direction. This has also become an important life choice for Zhang Hongjiang based on academic circles . Zhang Hongjiang eventually became the subject leader of video retrieval and search.

At the age of 30, Zhang Hongjiang entered the National Institute of Systems Science at the National University of Singapore and led various research topics such as video and image content analysis and retrieval, computer vision and information systems. During his term of service, Zhang Hongjiang published his first paper in this field in the first issue of Multimedia Systems Magazine, establishing a basic framework for modern video retrieval and content search, and becoming the most classic document in modern multimedia research. one.

Zhang Hongjiang, 35, joined HP Labs in the Silicon Valley Center in the United States as a director of research. Three years later, he was invited to chair the technical committee of ACM 1999 Multimedia World Congress and became the first Chinese to hold this post.

  Zhang Hongjiang of Microsoft era

In early 1999, Zhang Hongjiang, who had been drifting overseas for many years, made an important decision: returning home and joining Microsoft Research Asia.

A year later, Zhang Hongjiang, a 40-year-old vice president of Microsoft Research Asia, is responsible for multimedia computing, video and image analysis and retrieval, pattern recognition, web search and discovery, natural language and distributed computer systems, and more. The research work has resulted in a large number of first-class R&D achievements and a large number of innovative technologies for Microsoft's product development. It has made outstanding contributions to the development of Microsoft Asia Research Institute as a world-class top research organization for computing technologies.

In 2003, Zhang Hongjiang personally created Microsoft Asia Engineering Academy. In January 2006, Microsoft China R&D Group was established and became the largest and most fully-functional R&D base outside of the United States. Dr. Zhang Hongjiang served as chief technology officer of R&D Group.

Zhang Hongjiang of the Jinshan era

In the summer of 2011, Zhang Hongjiang helped a friend Yu Leijun talk about a project cooperation. After discussing the official business, Lei Jun said a word to him whether he would join Jinshan as the CEO.

"It's too sudden. It's my appointment, and there isn't any connection between the two topics." Zhang Hongjiang said afterwards. His first reaction at that time was "I can't do it. How can an engineer who has been technically and technically responsible for a lifetime manage to be the CEO of a company with such a complicated business structure?" But the real idea of Zhang Hongjiang's heart is that this 12 years The Microsoft Engineering Academy of Asia, which he brought up with big hands, is on the right track. At this time, he seems to be more interested in finding new challenges. All concerns were quickly dispelled by real ideas.

In October 2011, Zhang Hongjiang once again made an important choice in life: Microsoft, who had left office for more than 10 years, joined Jinshan Group as its CEO. The "old boy" Zhang Hongjiang who was recruited by Lei Jun to take care of Ma Tao took the posture of "returning to zero" to lead the Jinshan Group on a new journey.

But this journey does not seem to be frank, when the Jinshan Group has a total of more than 3,000 employees, the core business includes: WPS, games, security and other tool software. Moreover, various businesses faced with relatively large problems. WPS encountered a bottleneck in user growth and the group’s prospects were not clear. The stock price of Kingsoft once fell to more than HK$2.

Zhang Hongjiang found out that the Jinshan business was far more complicated than he had imagined. He was very anxious and had no clue. Zhang Hongjiang once said: “Older colleagues used to say that I lost a lot, but I feel more energetic. There are things that I can’t finish everyday. Although I’m tired, I feel very fulfilled after finishing.”

Today, five years later, the team of more than 3,000 people has expanded to more than 6,000 people and was split into several subsidiaries, including Cheetah Mobile, Jinshan Office, Jinshan Cloud, and Xishanju. In 2015, Jinshan Group’s revenue was 5.6761 billion yuan. The revenue generated from online games, cheetah mobile, office software and other businesses accounted for 24%, 63% and 13% of the total revenue, respectively. Gross profit increased by 58% year-on-year to 4.356 billion yuan.

Zhang Hongjiang was selected as the “Best CEO of China’s Listed Companies” in the “Forbes” Chinese version for two consecutive years, and reached the peak of his career. Today, Zhang Hongjiang is officially publicly about to retire. This means that Zhang Hongjiang’s professional career will end in more than 30 years.

  Career summary and vision

There are more and more people entering the industry from the academic circle, but few people are truly successful in both areas. In reviewing Zhang Hongjiang's years, he undoubtedly walked in the forefront of both academic and business direction.

And this pioneer who stands at the forefront of the team is always full of visions for future technology.

On August 12th, 2016, Zhang Hongjiang delivered the keynote speech titled “ Intelligence, Big Data, and Cloud ” at the CCF-GAIR artificial intelligence and robotics summit hosted by Lei Feng. He expressed his expectations for artificial intelligence in the final stage of his career. After the meeting, Zhang Hongjiang summed up his professional trajectory in an interview with Lei Fengwang (search for "Lei Feng Net" public number attention) :

I think this is a "call", from Silicon Valley to Microsoft, to Jinshan, love and enthusiasm never extinguished. Initially, there was only 3 years of planning, but in the end it insisted on doing 12 years. In the process, you will find that there are many new things to do every day. This feeling is very exciting, and it is this feeling that gives me a steady stream of motivation to accept new challenges.
