Arctic Diary - Departing from Longyearby Looking at the End of the World

If someone asks me now, if only one place is selected for travel, I will tell him to choose the Arctic if conditions permit. The scenery here can be described as extreme.

Before he went to the North Pole, he made up for BBC's famous documentary "The Frozen Planet." The extreme scenery and diverse species of the Arctic gave me enough hope for this trip.

This trip to the U.S. and U.S., the miracle trip of the Arctic Mishima for a total of 18 days, the plane went directly to Helsinki, Finland. After a day's stay, it flew to the northernmost city, Longyear, and then to Longyear. Embark on a boat and head north to Svalbard. The northernmost point can reach 80 degrees north latitude. Then turn south and head to the Kesselsund Sound in the northeast of Greenland. Then cross the Danish Strait to Iceland. After a two-day excursion, they returned from Helsinki and spent 12 days on board. From the itinerary point of view, there are many highlights and it should be a trip that is very filmy. Prior to departure, the most considered thing is how to use photographic equipment. In fact, there is no good match. If you can take pictures, there will only be one Sony A7R2 micro-single, plus three lenses. The main consideration is how to bring less. Late lazy cancer is generally the case.

This is a video clip taken this time, all shot in 4K

This is my main equipment for the Arctic. I learned on the boat that this is not a bad idea. The most powerful ones are two Canon 500mm cannons, plus a 2x multiplier. It is also spelled. This time I took photos together with 4K video, osmo main video, A7R2 video and photos.

Extreme North City - Longyearbyen

This is the capital of the Svalbard islands. It has long been heard that here is the northernmost city inhabited by humanity. It is also a good place to watch the aurora. I did not expect to come here in the summer. The plane landed on an easy runway, and the people coming and going in the hall were all dressed in travel. Outside the hall is filled with a variety of luggage. In July, a tourist season like this, Longyearbyen is extremely lively. The earliest development was due to the development of the coal mining industry, which gradually developed into a small town. This town has only one main street. The most famous is the global seed bank, which is located on a hillside, and currently holds 860,000 seed backups from more than 4,000 plant species in all kinds of global gene banks, including crop seeds such as beans, wheat and rice. . What is necessary is to prepare for the day after the extinction of the Earth species. After staying here for about 3 hours, we boarded a boat to the North Pole.

Not long after being cheerful, the phone lost its signal, followed by 12 consecutive days of isolation.
Standing on the side of the ship, looking at the snow-capped mountains not far away, I do not feel that I am currently within the Arctic Circle. This is probably the reason why the temperature in the Arctic is high this year and there is not much snow on the mountain.

The beginning of surprise - Monaco Glacier

On board the ship was suffering from a time lag and lethargic. At this time, the Arctic sky was not dark. I heard the radio saying that the blue whale was found not far from the bow. He jumped subconsciously and grabbed the camera. He turned to think, the whale Have you ever seen in Iceland before you go to sea? I am afraid that at the same time I could not see a skeleton and fell back to sleep. On the next day while listening to briefings on board, the expedition members said that it may be difficult for a person to see a blue whale for a lifetime. I feel a little sorry and feel that I can sleep at any time. This time the blue whale missed and I do not know when to look again. Arrived.

We arrived at the Monaco Glacier on the northern tip of Svalbard on July 18. At this point the ship has been anchored and is ready to take us to the sea with an assault boat. Our place to go to the sea is Breen in Monaco, Bay of Monaco.

Although this time it was July, it still felt very cold as it met the blowing sea breeze on the assault boat.

The reason why the Monaco glaciers are annotated is that the entire glaciers are huge and the glaciers reaching the strait are 5 km wide. There are floating ice, seals and waterbirds inhabiting the sea.

The assault boat gradually approaches the ice wall that resembles a huge wall, and can hear the rumbling of the glaciers continuously. This is the result of continuous ice cracking of the glaciers.

Suddenly it was like a thundering sound. Looking at the sound, the sea waved up and a large piece of ice had collapsed into the sea. What is strange is that the exposed fresh ice is indeed a more blue color.

The assault boat traveled to a place not far from the glacier. I used the telephoto lens to find numerous seabirds in the bottom of the glacier near the sea. After the expedition members said that the glacier had collapsed, the seabirds that had previously inhabited would fly out, which was spectacular.

As the members of the expedition constantly warned, there were not only waterfowl on the ice floes of the sea, but seals lazily lolling on the ice floes. Seals in the northern waters are significantly larger and more fat, so that they have the capital to fight the icy sea and climate.

The ice here is clear blue, more pure than the glaciers I saw in Iceland and Norway. Iceland's ice is covered with a layer of black ash, and the surface of Norwegian glaciers is also mixed with a lot of dirt, only the ice here, no impurities, the sea is clear enough to be able to see the icy ice in the water under the ice. Why is the ice here blue? Due to the long time of formation, there are many ice floes that have been on the glaciers for thousands of years. A long period of ice extrusion squeezed the air out. Therefore, when the ice lacks air, when the light is refracted, the blue light with a shorter wavelength is more likely to be refracted through the ice, so the glaciers and ice floes we see are blue. If you pick up an ice floe in the sea, you find it completely transparent, like glass. Arctic ice whisky is served on board every day. In fact, we can use every day to make a few pieces of our own to match whiskey.
