ã€Worldwide Technology Reports】 ASML, the world's largest supplier of chip lithography equipment, filed lawsuits against Nikon for patent infringement in three countries. ASML stated that it has not received notification of this legal action. Flatly denies any alleged copyright infringement.
ASML believes that Nikon’s allegations lacked basis. We will consider adopting all feasible plans to firmly safeguard our rights and interests.
As detailed in our annual report, ASML and Nikon signed a patent cross-licensing agreement in 2004. Some of these patents are permanently authorized, while others are authorized to expire on December 31, 2009. The transition period in which both parties agreed to take no legal action against each other ended on December 31, 2014.
Peter Wennink, president and CEO of ASML, stated: “The lawsuit brought by Nikon is groundless and unnecessary and will bring uncertainty to the entire semiconductor industry. In the past few years, ASML has repeatedly tried to cross with Nikon. Agreement on the extension of the authorization agreement was negotiated, but Nikon did not make any real efforts to do this, but instead chose to take legal action and we were extremely disappointed with this. We still believe that the results of the two parties' negotiated settlement will necessarily be better for the industry. Choices will drive innovation and cooperation in the industry, and such unnecessary patent litigation will result in the industry being unable to focus on what really matters: that is, through technological innovation to provide chip manufacturers with better products and services. Compete in the market rather than in court."
