However, OT networks require guaranteed, timely packet transmission rather than the best method commonly used in today's IT networks. At the same time, the technology currently used in the OT domain is usually limited to 10-100 Mbps transmission rate, and its bandwidth is not enough to support the needs of new manufacturing technologies, such as high-definition video. Time-sensitive networks support legacy IT and OT devices in the same network and provide gigabit bandwidth while simplifying network deployment and management processes.

Robust reference design platform for fast productionOEMs can now begin to develop TSN-enabled systems using NXP's TSN reference design platform, speeding up prototyping and deploying next-generation industrial solutions. This reference design platform provides four Gigabit Ethernet TSN switch ports with the processing and security features of the NXP Layerscape processor. The platform uses the industry's open source Linux SDK to provide real-time performance, TSN configuration support, and IEEE 1588 precision time protocol. Developers can take advantage of the SDK's configuration software to quickly demonstrate the pros and cons of TSN time-sensitive networks. Applications written by the developer for the reference design platform are forward compatible with the LS1028A SoC through standard APIs.
