NB-IoT enhancement technology, how much do you know?

In order to meet more application scenarios and market demands, 3GPP carried out a series of enhancement technologies for NB-IoT in Re-14 and completed the core specification in June 2017. Enhancement technology adds positioning and multicast capabilities, provides higher data rates, paging and random access on non-anchor carriers, enhances connectivity in connected states, and supports lower UE power levels.

Positioning function: Positioning service is the basic requirement of many services of the Internet of Things. Based on location information, many value-added services can be derived. NB-IoT enhancement introduces OTDOA and E-CID positioning technology. The terminal can report the supported positioning technologies to the network, including positioning technologies based on OTDOA, A-GNSS, E-CID, WLAN, and Bluetooth. The network side selects a suitable positioning technology according to the capabilities of the terminal and the current wireless environment.

Multicast function: In order to more effectively support functions such as message bursting and software upgrade, NB-IoT enhancement introduces multicast technology. The multicast technology is based on the SC-PTM of LTE, and the terminal receives the grouped service data through the SC-MTCH.

Data rate increase: The new capability class UE Category NB2 is introduced in Rel-14. The maximum transport block supported by Cat NB2 UE is increased to 2536 bits, and the uplink and downlink peak rate of a non-anchor carrier can be increased to 140/125. Kbps.

Non-anchor carrier enhancement: In order to achieve better load balancing, the function of paging and random access on non-anchor carriers is added to Rel-14. In this way, the network can better support large connections and reduce the probability of random access collisions.

Mobility enhancement: The NB-IoT control plane CIoT EPS optimization scheme in Rel-14 introduces RRC connection re-establishment and S1 eNB RelocaTIon IndicaTIon flow. During the RRC connection reestablishment, the original base station can return the unsent NAS data to the MME through the S1 eNB RelocaTIon IndicaTIon process, and the MME sends the NAS data to the UE through the new base station. The user plane CIoT EPS optimization scheme uses the data forwarding function in the original handover process of the LTE when the radio link fails.

Lower UE power level: Rel-14 introduces a 14dBm UE power level based on the original 23/20dBm power level. This can meet some application scenarios that do not require extreme coverage but require a small capacity battery.
