New Plimp drone: Automatically switch between fixed and rotary wings

According to foreign media reports, Seattle-based EganAirships recently launched a drone called Plimp. The 28-foot (8.5-meter) long drone is equipped with a non-flammable helium balloon that provides partial lift, and its wing-shaped rigid body allows it to fly as fast as a conventional drone.

Plimp's two wing rotations allow it to take off and land vertically. However, this drone can also be quickly translated in the air like a fixed-wing aircraft. In this mode, the maximum speed can reach 40 mph (64 km/h). If there is a problem with the motor, 55 pounds (25 kg) of Plimp will not fall from the sky. Due to the buoyancy of its helium balloons and the lift provided by the wings, it was reportedly able to glide at a speed of 9 mph (14 km/h).

The helium balloon also made the Plimp drone highly visible. According to the company, this factor should ensure that pilots of other aircraft see it and avoid collisions with it. Plimp can be used to include advertising, mapping/drawing, surveillance, inspections, and aerial photography. Plimp plans to go public in the first quarter of next year.
