On April 15th, two Brooklyn-based app developers set a new Guinness World Record by spending 50 consecutive hours watching content through the Oculus Rift VR headset. Their goal? To push the boundaries of how long someone could wear a VR device without breaking any rules. According to foreign media reports, they began their challenge at 8:45 AM that day at home, streaming a variety of VR films and 360-degree panoramic videos via YouTube. These included "Star Wars: Grand Theft 1," "Invaders," "The Robin Hood of Prince Thieves," "The Walking Dead," and even "Fast Hit."
Throughout the challenge, they were permitted to take a five-minute break each hour, but closing their eyes or removing the headset was strictly forbidden. To keep track of their compliance, they used eye-tracking software and cameras to monitor whether they stayed awake. To stay alert, they consumed large amounts of energy drinks like coffee and Red Bull, along with snacks such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
After enduring 50 hours of sleep deprivation, dizziness, and extreme fatigue, they successfully completed the challenge at 10:45 AM on April 17th, earning the title of "Longest Time Wearing a Virtual Reality Headset." This wasn’t the first time someone had attempted something similar; the UK previously hosted a 25-hour VR gaming marathon.
While the challenge didn’t come with monetary rewards beyond the Guinness certification, the participants ensured they had enough food and drinks to last them throughout the ordeal. However, their ordeal didn't end there. Both friends ended up in the hospital afterward due to physical discomfort caused by prolonged exposure to VR. Doctors conducted thorough examinations to assess potential long-term health impacts from extended VR use.
Beyond physical strain, there's also a psychological toll associated with prolonged immersion in virtual reality. One gamer mentioned feeling a sense of derealization after spending too much time in VR. Challenger Christison admitted post-challenge that isolation within the virtual environment was one of the hardest parts.
Manufacturers of VR devices are aware of these risks and are working hard to minimize motion sickness and other adverse effects. They also emphasize responsible usage, encouraging users to limit their time spent in VR to avoid negative consequences. Despite these efforts, the allure of exploring immersive worlds continues to attract adventurers willing to test their limits—sometimes at great personal cost.
