In today's world, as consumer spending continues to rise, people's desire for a better quality of life is stronger than ever. Devices like smartphones that we carry with us daily and smart TVs that fill our living rooms are no longer just about function—they also need to have a "technological feel" in design. In the current TV market, two major technologies are competing to shape the future of television.
OLED technology has been around for a while but hasn't yet become mainstream. Although the iPhone X helped boost OLED’s popularity, its use in the TV industry has already shown promising results and has officially entered the market. OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diodes, or organic light-emitting semiconductors. Unlike traditional LCD and quantum dot TVs, OLED TVs can emit light on a per-pixel basis. This eliminates the need for color filters, liquid crystals, and polarizers, making them lighter and more compact. In fact, OLEDs can be truly designed as "thin, wallpaper-like" displays.
From a quality perspective, OLED TVs offer superior contrast compared to LCD TVs. Since each pixel can be individually turned on and off, they achieve near-perfect black levels without any light emission. Additionally, OLEDs provide excellent color performance due to their self-lighting properties, which result in more accurate and vivid colors.
However, OLEDs still face several challenges. High prices, limited lifespan, and low production rates have prevented them from becoming widely popular, despite being labeled as "future TV technology." The current OLED TV market is still struggling with insufficient panel supply, and an underdeveloped industrial chain has slowed down its widespread adoption. While OLED has potential, it still needs time and technological improvements before it becomes the standard for future TVs.
On the other hand, 8K technology is gaining momentum. In August, Sharp launched the world’s first consumer-grade 8K TV, marking a significant step forward. While 4K TVs have already captured a portion of the market, 8K offers four times the resolution of 4K and 16 times that of 1080p. With 33 million pixels, 8K can surpass human eye recognition by 4.3 times. Beyond just clarity, 8K improves picture precision, color gamut coverage, color depth, and frame rate, offering a much richer visual experience.
Sharp is pushing for dedicated 8K cameras and video editing tools, and with the arrival of 5G, streaming 8K content will become more convenient. This makes 8K not only more powerful in terms of technical capabilities but also more likely to gain widespread acceptance. Currently, Sharp has a 10.5-generation line for producing 8K panels, enabling mass production and improving both content and hardware. Considering the completeness of the industry chain, 8K has a higher chance of being widely accepted in the market.
Although OLED was introduced earlier, it still faces issues such as high costs, short lifespan, and low production efficiency, which have made consumers hesitant to fully adopt it. As a result, OLED TVs have not yet reached mass production levels, which hinders their popularity.
Some may argue that 8K is too early, but I believe now is the right time. Technologies that enhance lifestyle and provide new experiences will never be considered too advanced. Just as 4K became popular in the past, 8K TVs will follow a similar path in the near future.
