EDOM Technology Sharing: What issues should you pay attention to when designing wearable products?

On December 2nd, the 3rd China IOT Conference held by Huaqiang Jufeng's Electronic Enthusiasts Network was held at the Shenzhen Kexing Science Park International Conference Center. In the afternoon, the contents of the six sessions were equally colorful. At the wearable conference sub-forum sharing meeting, Mr. Xie Jianguo from EDOM Technology shared with us how Silicon Labs provides software and hardware development for IoT chips, sensors and IoT. The complete set of solutions is also a factor in how to consider the design of wearable products.

According to the introduction before the Xie General Conference, EDOM Technology is a Taiwan agent. Currently, it is responsible for more than 60 product lines such as NXP and Silicon Labs, and is the largest agent in Silicon China. The company has always focused on the IC channel business and has achieved outstanding results over the years.

Silicon Labs: Focus on IoT chips

From the initial production of mobile phone mediators, Silicon Labs gradually emerged as a crystal, oscillator, clock source, 8Bit MCU, TV demodulator, EFM32 MCU, etc. Silicon Labs can be said to have a very rich IoT product line. Generally, the Bluetooth and wifi modules that we normally see on the market are usually around 30-50m. While Silicon is in compliance with the specifications, the long-distance data transmission of the Bluetooth module can be more than 450M.

At the same time, Silicon Labs has developed a wearable product for ports such as P/PE for the wearable market. It is a multi-protocol Wireless compatible wearable, IoT-enabled Wireless port with integrated Cortex-M4 MCU and 24G RF module. The RF module can run protocol stacks of multiple different domains at the same time, and there is no problem in normal mutual access.

Wearable product application market is growing rapidly

What we usually call wearable products generally include sports tracking, smart bracelets, smart watches, smart headphones, smart glasses and other major products. Wearable products have been on the rise since 2009 and continue to be popular until 2014. The history of wearable products dates back to the 1950s, but was limited to a limited number of applications, such as the aerospace applications we are familiar with. With the continuous development of wearable technology in recent years, wearable products have entered the lives of ordinary people. According to the statistics of authoritative organizations, from 2013 to 2017, the wearable market has experienced explosive growth from the number of products to the market scale. It has continued to grow from the previous 8B (8 billion) to 20B (20 billion), and so far. Still in rapid development.

Factors to consider when designing wearable products

Regarding the design details of wearable products, Mr. Xie mentioned the following five points of attention at the meeting:

First, battery power is the design point that needs to be focused first. In order to achieve the maximum replacement period, the best products are compatible with 6-12 months of continuous power supply, and the replaceable products can be required to reach 7-30 days;

Secondly, the size of the product, the portability of the wearable device, the size and weight of the product required to be lightweight, must be small and light;

The third is the functional aspect, the performance supports touch sensing processing, and has a good system UI smooth experience;

The fourth point is the wireless connection. The first thing to consider is the implementation of the Bluetooth connection. Secondly, Wi-Fi can be implemented under the condition that the condition is met, so that the technology is connected with the cloud platform.

The fifth point is the time to market. A certain time to market can determine the key factors of product vitality. At the same time, the cost price of the final product, which is aimed at the mass consumer rather than the niche and the mainstream of the market, must be considered.

Silicon Labs Sensors Best Practices and Practices

Silicon Labs offers a full range of fully supported solutions for wearable products, including external sensing sensors, MCU central data processing, wireless data transceiving, and development tools for software development and test debugging of wearable products. Silicon Labs' wireless offerings for Bluetooth and Sub-GHz transceivers are particularly prominent and have a very rich product line.

Sensors Silicon has Si70xx relative temperature and humidity sensor, one of the world's lowest power temperature and humidity sensors, and does not require any temperature correction during the development and production stages. The latest product accuracy can reach 0.1 °C, which can be used in life and medical thermometer products. And combined with external Bluetooth, combined with mobile phone APP control to achieve infant and child temperature measurement products "warm beans", are very successful and significant wearable products.

In light sensing test measurements, Silicon Labs provides Si11xx light sensors, including proximity light sensing, ambient light detection, etc., such as real-time distance between people and objects, enabling backlighting of the wearable product and turning off state control. It also supports UV measurement of sunlight (Si1132UV index sensor), heart rate and oximetry measurement, etc. Si11xx light sensor is widely used in sports body and health monitoring.

Silicon Labs offers three implementations of measuring heart rate modules

In combination with the current heart rate monitoring program of Silicon Labs, Xie also offers several options for monitoring heart rate.

1, using Silicon light sensing, self-implementation of data algorithms, this method is difficult to develop, the advantages are characteristics, flexibility is also large;

2, Silicon light sensor + configuration of the light module, and use the supporting dynamic data algorithm library, because it is the product bundle, the use of Silicon Labs' EMF MCU chip;

3. The last one is to use the Valencell module to enable rapid market launch of dynamic data measurement products.
