In the rapidly growing Internet of Things (IoT) market, sensors have become a key focus. Smartphones now incorporate more sensors than ever, and this trend is also evident in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). But what other industries are driving sensor innovation? Beyond the obvious applications like smartphones and ADAS, sectors such as industrial automation and smart cities are also experiencing significant growth. Recently, EDN China reporters visited five companies at Sensor China to explore their insights on current sensor applications and the innovative products they offer.
**Honeywell: Environmental Monitoring with Multi-Sensor Solutions**
Honeywell’s sensor division recently shifted from “sensing and control†to “sensors and IoT,†reflecting a strategic move toward IoT-focused R&D and high-growth markets. Health and safety are major trends, and Honeywell showcased environmental sensors that measure pollutants like PM2.5, formaldehyde, TVOC, and carbon dioxide. These sensors help monitor indoor air quality, which can significantly impact human health and cognitive performance.
Home appliances and wearables are also seeing rapid sensor adoption. A single appliance may use several sensors, and future models could integrate over a dozen. Electric vehicles are another area of growth. Unlike some competitors who rely on algorithms to interpret multiple parameters with one sensor, Honeywell uses dedicated sensors for each parameter. For example, a customer using an air purification system discovered unusual PM2.5 spikes due to wildfires in Canada. Honeywell’s precise sensors helped detect these changes accurately.
Additionally, Honeywell provides software solutions, including cloud-based SAP integration, to manage sensor data. This helps logistics companies monitor temperature, humidity, and vibration in real-time, improving supply chain efficiency and reducing waste—such as damaged flowers during transport.
**Beijing North Wake Up: Lidar Evolution Toward Solid-State Technology**
Lidar has gained popularity in autonomous vehicles, robotics, and drones. Beixing Photonics focuses on laser radar and SLAM algorithms. Their products, such as the TF01 and C30, are used in agricultural drones and AGVs for obstacle avoidance. While foreign lidars like Google’s 64-line rotating systems are expensive, solid-state alternatives like CE30 offer better durability and stability at a lower cost.
Zhang Yuan, Marketing Manager at Beixing, emphasized that while millimeter-wave radar is competitive, it lacks the precision of lidar. Therefore, multi-sensor fusion is often necessary. The company also offers SLAM algorithm boards, enabling robots to map environments and navigate autonomously.
**Zhongxing Measurement & Control: Smart Neighborhoods Powered by Sensors**
Zhongxing Measurement & Control specializes in exporting Chinese sensors globally. Their efforts in R&D and partnerships have made their products popular abroad. They collaborate with ZTE, Huawei, and telecom operators to implement NB-IoT systems for smart cities.
Their solutions span from sensors to cloud platforms and mobile apps. For instance, parking and waste management systems benefit from sensor data. In parking, sensors help drivers locate empty spots, while in waste management, they optimize collection routes, reducing labor by up to 70%.
**E+H: Precision in Industrial Pressure Sensors**
E+H, based in Switzerland, focuses on industrial measuring instruments and automation. Their pressure sensors are used in various fields, including oil and gas and chemical industries. With digital technology, E+H has improved accuracy and low power consumption. Their single-crystal silicon differential pressure sensors offer high stability and overload resistance, making them ideal for demanding industrial applications.
**Sensor Customization: Reducing Costs and Enhancing Performance**
Dr. Steve Petrucelli of Jingliang Technology highlighted the importance of custom-designed sensors. His company develops pressure and temperature sensors, offering OEM solutions. One example is a planar sensor array that reduces costs significantly compared to traditional designs. These sensors can be used in medical devices or industrial tools, showcasing the versatility of modern sensor technology.
As the IoT continues to evolve, the role of sensors will only grow. From smart homes to industrial automation, the future is being shaped by intelligent, accurate, and reliable sensing technologies.
