Plessey, the UK, has announced a new generation of silicon-based GaN LEDs . The model is PLW114050 and is currently sampling. This is Plessey's first entry-level LED lighting product. Plessey offers Blu-ray PLB010050 in the form of a saw-die.
The 0.2W device has a luminous flux of up to 12.3 lumens and a luminous efficacy of 64 lumens per watt, which is twice the size of the first generation of silicon-based GaN LEDs that Plessy introduced in April this year. The color temperature ranges from 2,700K to 6,500K and is distributed in Lambertian range of +/-60° in an industry standard 3020 package. At 60 mAh, the forward voltage drop is 3.2V.
“We have made great strides in refining and production and have improved our patented MAGIC,†said Dr. Keith Strickland, Plessey Chief Technology Officer.
However, Plesse claims to continue to improve performance and quickly match the sapphire LED. "We plan to focus on improving MAGIC to the level of light efficiency that sapphire-based LEDs can achieve, and thus setting a new milestone in lumen performance per dollar," Strickland said. “By introducing cost-effective products, we are accelerating the widespread adoption of silicon-based GaN LED lighting products.â€
It is expected that this next-generation silicon-based GaN LED will be applied to backlighting dashboards, navigation devices and audio systems, as well as in decorative lighting and lighting systems.
