PS4 look! The Japanese favorite game console turned out to be it

In the early days of the Nintendo Switch, there was a real sense of panic among Japanese gamers. The console's immense popularity led to a severe shortage, making it nearly impossible for consumers to get their hands on one. This scarcity created a frenzy—queues stretching for hours, even overnight, outside stores across Japan. Some retailers even resorted to selling the consoles through "yaohō" (a system where customers would queue up and pay in advance). At one point, it was almost impossible to find a Switch on the market, leading to a black market and inflated prices.

Surprisingly, in Japan, the most sought-after gaming console isn't the PS4 or Xbox, as many might expect. Instead, it's Nintendo’s Switch, which launched earlier this year. Recent sales data shows that the Switch has completely dominated the Japanese market. In just one week, it sold 84,593 units, while the PS4 came in second with 23,613 units—nearly four times fewer. This massive gap highlights how deeply the Switch has captured the hearts of Japanese gamers.
Nintendo recently announced a new distribution round in Japan, and it's no surprise that all available units were snapped up within minutes. Retailers reported complete sell-outs, proving once again that the Switch is more than just a game console—it's a cultural phenomenon in Japan. While other consoles may have their fans, it's clear that the Switch holds a special place in the hearts of Japanese gamers.
