What are the business opportunities in the mobile market?

With the vigorous development of mobile devices, the PC industry is declining, and Intel, the former PC hegemon, is sure to have more new ideas and new strategies in the face of changes in the industry and rapid industrial changes. Ken Dulaney, vice president of Gartner, who has long studied smart phones, tablets, NB, industrial handheld devices, wireless communications, mobile software and device management strategies, is also the chief analyst of Gartner's research on Intel. In view of the various problems encountered by Intel, he also put forward his analysis points.

Through the Haswell processor, Intel's "per-watt performance" opened a new era of computing.

Q: With the continued decline in global PC sales and the growing sales of mobile devices such as tablets, how should Intel respond to this ever-changing market and fully seize business opportunities?

Dulaney: Intel must not only continue to focus on the improvement of the traditional PC / NB field, but also must catch up in the current high sales areas such as tablets and smartphones. Its growth is mainly based on combining the performance and compatibility of the x86 platform with the low power consumption required in the emerging mobile device field. Intel's leading generation of process technology will be its key technology to move closer to the mobile market.

Q: The proliferation of mobile devices has led the growth of the cloud and data centers, prompting companies to begin to focus on how to reduce costs while increasing utilization. How will Intel respond to the needs of enterprises in this regard?

Dulaney: Intel can be said to be the leading manufacturer in this trend, hoping to provide companies with technology to improve the overall data center performance while also maintaining low costs. The purpose of Intel is to improve the utilization rate, economic scale and flexibility of the Microsoft data center. Its rack-level (Rack Scale) optical technology can improve the performance of the backplane used in most data centers.

Intel ’s Atom processor solution for the data center helps increase cost efficiency and reduce power consumption. And Intel's enhanced solutions for microservers can also solve the data scale and efficiency problems faced by cloud service providers. In addition, Intel continues to strengthen its Xeon-class processors that are popular in these environments as usual.

Q: Some people think that the Haswell processor is expected to stimulate the growth of the 2-in-1 device (notebook / tablet hybrid device) market. How does Intel maintain Haswell's long-term market advantage?

Dulaney: Haswell processor with 22nm technology is Intel ’s first processor to introduce the new generation of Core i series and Atom processor architecture with 14nm process by 2014. During this time, Intel's "per-watt performance" will open a new era that people could not imagine five years ago.

Therefore, the focus should not only be on Haswell, but also include the series of processors and terminal products that Intel will introduce in the next few years. Intel will play an important role in both the Windows and Android camps, and we will see many product categories across these two platforms next.

Intel's challenges in the tablet and smartphone markets are mainly due to the fact that the two major device manufacturers, Apple and Samsung, do not rely on Intel's supply (Samsung uses some Intel chips). Intel must expand its market share by cooperating with emerging manufacturers (such as Chinese manufacturers that have both local and international market growth potential).

Question: Although the sales volume of Ultrabook is not as expected, it has spawned better industrial design and more elegant appearance in the PC market. What should Intel do to make its innovative product concept jump into the mainstream of the market?

Dulaney: I think the real problem with accelerating or delaying the shipment of Ultrabook products comes from Microsoft. Windows 8 is a major change in application design, but many partners and vendors that Microsoft relies on adopt this new platform at a slow pace. Intel and Microsoft must work harder to promote their camp to speed up the launch of more applications, which is the basis for the success of an ecosystem.
