American Analog Devices, Inc. has released the ADP8870 white LED charging pump backlight driver (this component can reduce the power consumption of battery-operated handheld devices by as much as 45% without sacrificing viewing quality.
The ADP 8870 combines several key features: a programmable backlight LED driver for photo transistor input to automatically control the brightness of the LED; a pulse width modulation (PWM) input -- to manage the output current size. The combination of these features can automatically change the current intensity depending on the level of the ambient light source and the white portion of the displayed image, thereby significantly reducing the use of electricity. By automating these functions, the ADP 8870 eliminates the need for a processor to monitor the optoelectronics and further reduces the need for power, simplifying the backlight design of portable devices.
"In general operating conditions such as web browsing and e-mail, LED backlighting can take up to 75% of the power used by portable electronic devices," said Dan Swan, product line director of ADI Power Conditioners. The ADP 8870 uses ambient light sensing and automatic adaptive backlight control to maximize battery life by optimizing primary and secondary displays, as well as QWERTY keyboard sources."
The ADP 8870 is capable of backlight control of up to seven LEDs or for their overall backlighting, keypad lighting, indicator lighting or fun lighting1. The strength of each set of LEDs can be programmed to allow designers to set fade-in, fade-out, dim, and off time.
