NXP: Mains input LED general lighting solution below 15W

The SSL152x family of devices developed by NXP is a Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) controller IC that accepts rectified universal AC voltage inputs directly. It is implemented using a high voltage EZ-HV SOI process and a low voltage BiCMOS process. The devices include a high voltage power switch and a start-up circuit that accepts rectified AC voltage directly.

The device has a dedicated valley-switching circuit that allows system designers to implement a very efficient ultra-thin solid-state lighting application.

The SSL152x can be used for LED lighting applications up to 15W. For applications with LED output powers ranging from 15W to 25W, the SSL1623PH is the best choice. When the LED output power is greater than 25W, the SSL1750 can be used.

In the most basic applications, the SSL152x family of devices is used as a voltage source. Here, the system designer is not required to have any additional auxiliary electronics knowledge. It enables a fused voltage and current source to be implemented with the lowest cost external components. The implementation of the SSL152x family of devices provides a high efficiency and low cost power system for utility input LED drivers .

Key features of the SSL152x family of devices include:

· Integrated power switch: SSL1522T (12,650 V) and SSL1523P (6.5,650 V)

· Designed for general purpose AC input LED lighting applications up to 15W output power

· Direct universal AC power drive (80V to 276V)

· Adjustable switching frequency allows for a more flexible design

· Valley switch for minimal conduction loss

· Low standby power consumption (less than 100mW) by reducing the switching frequency at low power output

· Adjustable overcurrent protection, undervoltage protection, overtemperature protection and short circuit protection

· Easy to implement simple applications with primary and secondary feedback (optical coupling)

· Available in DIP8 and SO14 packages

The main target applications for this series of devices include: 1) LED bulbs that directly replace incandescent bulbs; 2) LED ballasts; 3) channel character lighting; 4) commercial lighting such as closet or refrigerator lighting; 5) landscape contour lighting; ) Other lighting applications.
