Ford Motor Co., Ltd. Collaborates with Qualcomm and Nokia to Test Automotive Connectivity Technology

According to recent reports, Ford Motor has announced a partnership with Qualcomm, AT&T, and Nokia to test cellular modems that enable vehicles to connect with each other and with surrounding infrastructure. This technology aims to enhance navigation and safety in challenging weather conditions and complex environments.

The collaboration marks a significant step forward in the development of connected car technologies. Ford plans to conduct the first U.S. test in San Diego later this year, following similar trials in Europe. The system, known as Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X), allows cars to communicate with traffic lights, street signs, and other vehicles, sharing real-time data about road conditions and potential hazards.

This advancement is expected to improve driving safety and support the growth of autonomous vehicles. Ford’s vehicles will be equipped with Qualcomm’s hardware, powered by AT&T’s 4G LTE network and Nokia’s computing solutions. The integration of these technologies is designed to create a more seamless and intelligent driving experience.

Don Butler, executive director of Ford Smart Mobility, emphasized the importance of C-V2X in advancing autonomous driving and smart mobility. “This technology offers a reliable path for the future of self-driving cars and connected transportation,” he said.

Ford is actively integrating driver assistance features into its models and aims to launch an L4-level self-driving vehicle by 2021. CEO Jim Hackett recently mentioned that Ford will test autonomous vehicles in specific areas next year. Earlier this year, Hackett had expressed a goal to introduce modem interoperability technology across all Ford models in the U.S. by 2019.

As the automotive industry moves toward greater connectivity and automation, partnerships like this are becoming essential for shaping the future of transportation. With continued investment and innovation, companies like Ford are paving the way for smarter, safer, and more efficient mobility solutions.
