Intel acquired the wearable device manufacturer Basis in 2014 and then integrated the Basis brand into its newly formed New Devices Group (NDG). At that time, Intel wanted to aggressively enter the emerging wearable device market and take the opportunity to suppress rival Qualcomm.

In June 2015, Intel acquired Recon, a head-mounted device manufacturer.
However, this summer, Intel's wearable device program began to have problems. In June, Intel recalled the Basis Peak smart watch with excessive fever. It did not choose to replace the problem product for the user, but instead sold the device directly. Intel will take further steps to stop software support for Basis Peak (including cloud storage) from the end of this year.
Obviously, this is a big setback for Intel's wearable device dream. In addition to the release of TItanium smart watches, the acquisition of Basis did not bring much benefit to Intel.
According to sources close to Intel, Intel is planning to significantly reduce its investment in wearables and may even withdraw from the market. Intel will massively reduce the staff of the NDG division and its new technology group (New Technologies Group). In April last year, Intel integrated the DNG team into the new technology business group. The move is seen by the outside world as an early sign of Intel's dissatisfaction with its wearables division.
Intel has informed a number of employees about the matter, and many employees will leave before the end of the year.
In addition to the fact that many employees will be unemployed, Intel's move may also mean that some of the products that NDG is developing, including the Basis Ruby smartwatch, will never see a chance.
