Structure and Principle:
A rotary evaporator is a device used to efficiently remove solvents from samples under reduced pressure. It consists of a distillation flask, typically shaped like an eggplant or round-bottomed, which is connected to a vacuum pump through a condenser. The condenser is designed for high reflux efficiency, allowing the solvent to be condensed and collected in a receiving flask. A three-way valve is installed between the condenser and the vacuum pump, enabling the system to be connected to the atmosphere when needed. This allows the removal of the distillation flask and the transfer of the solvent without disrupting the vacuum process.
When operating the rotary evaporator, it's important to first reduce the pressure before starting the rotation of the distillation flask. At the end of the process, the machine should be turned off first, followed by releasing the vacuum to prevent the flask from falling off during rotation. A constant temperature water bath is often used as a heat source to ensure even heating during the evaporation process.
