Structure and Principle:

The rotary evaporator is a widely used device in laboratories for the efficient removal of solvents from samples. It consists of a distillation flask, typically shaped like an eggplant or round-bottomed, equipped with a standard ground joint. This flask is connected to a vacuum pump via a highly efficient serpentine condenser. The other end of the condenser connects to a receiving flask, which collects the evaporated solvent.

A three-way valve is installed between the condenser and the vacuum pump. When the system is opened to the atmosphere, the distillation and receiving flasks can be safely removed. When connected to the vacuum pump, the system operates under reduced pressure, allowing for faster evaporation at lower temperatures.

Before operation, the system should be evacuated first, followed by the activation of the motor that rotates the distillation flask. At the end of the process, the machine should be turned off before releasing the vacuum to prevent the flask from being dislodged during rotation. A constant temperature water bath is commonly used as a heat source to maintain stable conditions during distillation.
