The founder of the Chinese urban SUV market is the Honda CR-V? No, Mitsubishi Outlander is the true originator!

When comparing traditional SUVs to smaller ones, the latter often come with lower engine displacement and more affordable prices. On the other hand, when compared to sedans, they offer higher ground clearance and better visibility, along with convenient parking options and more. This combination of features is likely to make them increasingly appealing to consumers, further fueling the already heated market. Many people believe that the pioneer of China’s urban SUV market was the Honda CR-V. However, the true originator is actually the Mitsubishi Outlander, a brand renowned for its expertise in four-wheel drive technology. Those familiar with rally racing will recognize that Mitsubishi has claimed victory seven times at the American Rally, with the Outlander being the quintessential four-wheel-drive SUV designed for versatility. The domestically produced Outlander will feature four different models with 2.0L and 2.4L engines. The official starting price ranges from 15.98 million to 22.38 million yuan, while the current import price stands between 19.98 million and 28.48 million yuan. The dimensions of the domestically produced Outlander measure 4695 mm in length, 1810 mm in width, and 1680 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2670 mm. The locally manufactured Mitsubishi Outlander retains the original design of its imported counterpart but adds a more sporty touch to its front face with an X-shaped grille and chrome trim strips. The new headlight assembly enhances the vehicle's dynamic appearance. At the rear, the new taillights incorporate LED technology, with minor adjustments made to the reverse light placement compared to the imported version. Additionally, the words “Guangzhou Mitsubishi” are inscribed on the right side of the trunk to signify its domestic production. Overall, the rear styling is more conservative than the front. The interior design remains largely unchanged from the imported version, featuring an upgraded 8-inch touchscreen from the previous 7-inch display. The new infotainment system supports navigation, Baidu CarLife, Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity. The cabin also offers a two-tone color scheme, with premium models equipped with leather seats. Domestically produced Outlander will offer a 2+3+2 seven-seater layout, a rarity among compact SUVs in China’s joint ventures. The third row provides adequate legroom and headspace for emergencies. Powertrain options include 2.0L and 2.4L engines, with the 2.4L variant producing up to 192 horsepower. Transmission choices include a CVT unit, while high-end models will feature the S-AWC Super All-Wheel Control system. Following its domestic launch, the Outlander will face stiff competition in the compact SUV segment. Models like the Toyota RAV4, Nissan Qashqai, and Honda CR-V dominate the market with their established reputations. Despite Mitsubishi’s somewhat limited consumer base, the Outlander’s standout features—its seven-seat configuration and advanced all-wheel-drive system—set it apart. I believe GAC Mitsubishi’s Outlander will carve out its niche in this competitive landscape.
