The Wireless Charging Alliance officially introduced its Qi wireless charging technology international standards to China

The Wireless Charging Alliance officially introduced its Qi wireless charging technology international standards to the country, and began the promotion process in China.

Wireless charging technology is not a new technology. Many leading manufacturers in the electronic equipment industry chain have already mastered the corresponding solutions and designed and launched some products and applications, but they are all limited to niche scopes. An important reason for the lack of popularity is the lack of Internationally accepted standards, so that the products of different companies do not have extensive compatibility; and most users are reluctant to pay for wireless chargers that are not cost-effective than ordinary chargers.

For the Wireless Charging Alliance and the main promoters behind it, this is their favorite selling point. They want to provide unified specifications for all manufacturers and equipment. Therefore, the size of the alliance and the attitude of business partners are undoubtedly the key to its success or failure.

"More comprehensive quality"

The wireless charging alliance has a large market space for its layout. They have currently issued low-power technical specifications (for electronic devices not exceeding 5 watts, that is, mainly for mobile terminals), and will start to develop medium-power technical specifications in October (for (Electronic equipment not exceeding 120 watts, mainly notebook computers), long-term hope to expand to a variety of household appliances.

Similar to the various wireless charging technologies that have existed before, the Qi standard uses the current mainstream electromagnetic induction technology, adding electromagnetic induction devices to mobile phones and other terminals, and requires a wireless charger externally.

In the opinion of the people in this alliance, because they are developing internationally accepted standards for a variety of application scenarios, it is necessary to consider the design of the wireless power supply simply placed in the terminal housing, as well as the quality of the charging function implanted in the chip. Compared with previous wireless charging technologies, the Qi standard has undergone more rigorous research and development in terms of charging efficiency, power consumption, and safety, and has a "more comprehensive quality."

According to the data provided by the alliance, Qi's charging efficiency is very close to the wired charging efficiency, reaching more than 70% of the latter's efficiency; the standby power consumption of the charger is reduced to the level of microwatts; radiation and human safety, in terms of terminal and charger The coil has a very strong electromagnetic field, and the magnetic field is "very weak" outside this range. As for the wireless interference devices or functions that people are generally concerned about implanting into mobile phones or chips, it may bring electromagnetic interference to other mobile phone components or modules. Menno Treffers, chairman of the Wireless Charging Alliance, said that some of the members of the alliance have a large number of mobile phone manufacturers and chip manufacturers Participated in the formulation of standards, the engineers of these enterprises fully considered this factor in the standards, and after sufficient R & D and testing, "there is no such problem."

The ecosystem needs to be expanded

The Wireless Charging Alliance is full of confidence in the promotion of this standard. A market research company came to an estimate by interviewing product design companies and manufacturers that if in 2011 at least two major mobile phone manufacturers could embed the Qi standard in their high-end smartphones, the receiver in 2014 (can be easily understood The number of Qi wireless charging devices or function modules on the terminal can reach 240 million units. According to the alliance announcement, on August 14, they have certified the first batch of products that meet the Qi standard, and will soon be on the market.

For the Wireless Charging Alliance, technology is only one aspect. More importantly, it is to persuade large numbers of companies and institutions to join their ecosystem and adopt this standard.

According to the figures released by the alliance itself, its members have more than 50, mostly semiconductor chip manufacturers, mobile phone manufacturers, power supply manufacturers, consumer electronics manufacturers, including Nokia, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson, TI and other big names. However, a message from a member of the alliance to reporters pointed out that there are still many difficulties in promoting the standard.

"At this stage, we can see that although there are many members, most of the current active promotion are power supply and supporting manufacturers, as well as some mobile phone manufacturers that need bright spots to improve their performance."

The person believes that although the current low-power technical specifications announced by Qi are aimed at mobile phones, the attitude of mainstream mobile phone manufacturers is actually not clear. The person in the chip field said that although Qi has been improved in many ways compared to the past wireless charging technology under the joint research and development of multiple parties, the stability of its charging efficiency and the interference effects of electromagnetic waves have always been mobile phones. The manufacturer can't be completely assured, and its effect must be related to the appropriate transformation and matching of the terminal and chip.

"Under the background that many new technologies in the terminal field have not been well digested and applied, mainstream manufacturers may not take the risk to make a fuss in this piece." The person believes that the alliance hopes that at least two mainstream mobile phones next year It may be a big hurdle for manufacturers to embed the Qi standard. "It depends on whether the alliance has more powerful incentives."

The attitudes of mainstream mobile phone manufacturers are in fact interdependent with the attitudes of the other two parties, namely the environmental party and the end user.

The ideal state and the most attractive point of wireless charging technology is the convenience of charging anytime, anywhere, but this convenience depends largely on the popularity of the charger, that is, how many public places, office facilities, and homes are willing to Purchase or install charger / charging station. According to some previous surveys on wireless charging technology on the Internet, in the case where only a certain type of terminal can realize wireless charging, most users are reluctant to pay for the wireless charger themselves. The aforementioned chip field person also told reporters that the current negotiations and cooperation between the alliance and commercial institutions and public institutions have not yet made breakthrough progress. "It still takes time to watch."

"If wireless charging technology is widely promoted in various countries, there may be some new considerations in electromagnetic compatibility management and frequency management in various countries, which need to be complied with." A person from the National Communications and Metrology Station added that At present, the Communication Electromagnetic Compatibility Quality Supervision and Inspection Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has joined the Wireless Charging Alliance.
