As the demand for electronic devices continues to rise, so does the need for reliable internal connections. In response to this growing trend, TE Connectivity (formerly Tyco Electronics) has introduced a highly scalable line of shrapnel products designed to meet the increasing needs across various industries. These connectors are not only versatile but also offer improved performance and design flexibility.

The height of TE's adjustable shrapnel ranges from 1.8 mm to 3.4 mm. "All models share the same mounting point, allowing customers to easily switch between designs without major changes," said Eric Himelright, Director of Product Management at TE. "With our scalable shrapnel solutions, we aim to reduce design costs, accelerate time-to-market, and improve ROI for our customers."

A key feature of TE’s shrapnel is its preload function, which provides nearly double the working area compared to traditional designs and increases contact force by 0.2N. The product’s contact surface features dimples that enhance reliability, while the back-bend tip eliminates sharp edges to prevent unwanted capacitance between circuit lines. Additionally, the shrapnel includes a pick-and-place position for seamless integration into automated assembly lines. Small holes on the bottom of the component strengthen solder joints and reduce heat stress during the process.

Beyond the high-performance shrapnel, TE offers a full range of shrapnel products available in multiple sizes and configurations. Currently, four models are available, with effective heights ranging from 0.3 mm to 6.5 mm and widths from 0.8 mm to 2.5 mm. These compact components take up minimal space on PCBs and are compatible with standard soldering and pick-and-place equipment, making them ideal for use in a wide array of applications.

Shrapnel, also known as spring-loaded clips or universal ground contacts, serves three main functions: grounding between a device and the PCB, reducing vibration in shielded components like motors, antennas, speakers, and microphones, and acting as a signal connector for data transmission between primary and secondary PCBs.

Olive Wu, a TE product specialist, noted, “TE shrapnel is used in a broad range of applications, from mobile devices and PCs to home entertainment systems and industrial equipment.” With their small size and robust design, these connectors are well-suited for even the tightest spaces on printed circuit boards, making them a go-to solution for engineers seeking reliable and efficient connectivity options.
