Even the original goal of reaching 500,000 units in 2020 was considered impossible by Wall Street. The new target will require Tesla's production to grow faster than Ford at the beginning of the last century. At the time, Henry Ford pioneered the production line when it produced the Model T, making it the world's first mass-produced car. A century later, Tesla CEO Elon Musk hoped that Model 3 would become the electric version of Model T and aim to achieve a sales target of nearly 1 million units by 2020.

Regardless of Musk's fanaticism, skeptics believe that his goal cannot be achieved in modern times. If Tesla succeeds – and even Musk acknowledges that this is a difficult goal – it will bring huge changes to the global electric vehicle market, like the impact of the Ford Model T on fuel vehicles.
